When it comes to running a literacy block for any year level; it is based on whole-part-whole framework. What that means is that Whole means modelling what to do. So it means discussing with the whole class what activies every person will be doing. Also this part starts off with reading a certain text together as a class; then going into smaller groups to do extra activities about the text just read in the class. Part is working in small groups. These can be based on any activites, reading, writting, drawing.
These groups are usually put together at the start of the year based on ability levels within the class room. In my classroom, my teacher placed a powerpoint of the groups in colors according to ability levels, levels taken from testing early in the year - running records assessment so they are
grouped on their reading levels. After this the class because a whole group again, this usually means sharing and reflection of what activities each stundent has done. In my classroom there was a leader for each group.
This structure lets each student have a chance to do some creative writting, drawing, and different reading activities. As each day changes the groups rotate, giving the groups to do a different activity each day, and helps the teacher watch, analyse, and to assist every student.
