My learner is a 6 year old female, and is in grade one at Brighton Primary School, in Melbourne. She lives just 10 mintues from the school and often walks to school with her mum and her new puppy. She lives with her Dad, Mum and older siblings, sister and a brother. Her brother is in year 6 at Brighton Primary School, while her sister is in year 8 at a local secondary school. My learner likes reading about animals. She likes writing about what she does on the weekends and making up stories about animals or princesses. She chose a book called ‘Butterflies’ by (Adrella Nathanael), because that is what they read in her reading group this week. She chose it because she thinks butterflies are pretty and she knows how to read all the words in this story.

I then chose a book called 'Life Cycles' as it would engage her area of interest, she hadn't seen it before (so she'd need to use reading strategies). It was also related to the unit of inquiry her class are studying at the moment. My learner was good at using visual cues(pictures) to assist her in reading this book. She could use initial sounds to work out simple words, recognised frequently used words such as and, in, the, etc but sturggled with letter blends such as ing.

Her phonemic awarenss (sounding out words). In the 'Life Cycles' book it focuses on the life cycle of caterpillars, tadpoles, chicken and dogs. For example the word 'frog' is easy to sound out because you just say each sound but she did not recognise caterpillars because of the 'er' blend and the 'ar' blend.
My learner overall was a confident reader, she really engages in reading from what her teacher told me. As from what I could see she really liked reading, no matter what topic she was given.
