Writting Assesment In order to asses my learner I had to refer to (S.Hill, 2006, pg 290) Emergent and Early writing assessment sheet: See below
So now I asked my learner to write something about her book or the book I chose for her to read to me. There are three main areas of assesment. They are; Written language, Ideas, Text conventions. My learner wanted to draw the caterpillar turning into a butterfly. I suggested we look at the life cycle at the back of the book and have a go at that (egg arrow caterpillar arrow chrysalis arrow butterfly).
I asked her what she’d like to write about the book and to also draw a picture. She chose to write about her picture this is what my learner wrote
"I lik wen the catapila trnd in to a butafly."
Below is other writting my learner wrote about her book she read to me.
Writing language
Refering to Hills, assessment sheet, its clear to see that my learner is up to about Level 4, in her writing capability. She is capable to write a simple sentences. My learner is not yet up to the requirements of level 5 or 6, as she is not yet aware of punctuation, or able to produce paragraphs within her writing. Ideas
When we look for the ideas of the learners writing; I can see that my learner is up to Level 4. My learner can use sentences such as "I like.." Her teacher has told me, that she is close to Level 5, from looking at her journal; not only does she write about what she likes and what she did on the weekend. There is some form of writing that shows her own ideas. Such as creative writing. Text conventions
When it comes to text conventions my learner is very capable of writing directionality left to right, return sweep top to bottom. She puts spaces between words and lines. Her punctuation is used appropiately. I would classify my learner as Level 4. My learner is closely on her way to Level 5.
VELS Writing Standards:
Level 1 according to VELS(Victorian Essentail Learning Standards) should be able to write and understand their writing and communicate ideas, feelings and imformation. Use of letters and some words in the writing of brief texts about topics of personal interest. To have emergent writing showing concepts about print, including left to right, top to bottom. Are able to read back from their own writing, at the time of writing.
